EAST AFRICA LTI - - Nairobi Kenya
Rappin Mathare
Following a powerful Europe Teen Challenge Convention in Italy, thanks to your prayers and intercession, I was able to get to Africa. God made a way out from under the cloud of volcanic ash that stranded 7 million passengers in Europe. In Rome I caught a flight to Cairo, Egypt connecting to Africa to arrive in Nairobi on time. Thank God for the Leonardo DiVinci Express. I went into Bologna Monday night by faith. When I left the hotel in the morning, the taxi driver said, "Sorry all of the flights were cancelled today... I walked into the airport to a departure screen which revealed the next 27 cancelled flights! As I prayed, the screen changed revealing a departure time on a flight to Cairo, Egypt connecting into Kenya.
God is faithful. Thank you for praying!
I arrived to a wonderful welcome from Steve Pippen at 5 AM in Kenya. I shared a wonderful time with the Teen Challenge students, choir rehearsal, and ministry. As international guests began to arrive Fri/ Sat, Kenya TC hosted a goat barbecue. A blessed time of fellowship was interrupted by a last-minute call asking us to come to a street meeting in the North Mathare slum. The Liberia team joined me for ministry. As the evening skies began to cloud up and the threat of impending rain tried to dampen our enthusiasm, God held back the rains until the altar call when many came forward to confess Christ as their Lord. Doug Wever Bern Jacobus Nomdoe Kevin Ward
Please pray for Doug Wever who arrived sans luggage with a rotator cuff injury in real agony. We are providing training and preparing emerging leaders across the continent of Africa. John and Annie Martin, executive directors of Kenya Teen Challenge are hosting leaders from Ghana, Liberia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Swaziland, South Africa, Nigeria, Seychelles, and Mauritius. Steve Pippen worked hard to get preparations in order for these six powerful days of ministry, vision-casting, teaching, encouragement, and prayer. We joined with Pastor Nathan for street ministry in the slums of North Mathare to apply the lessons that are being taught and engage addicts where they live.
A highlight of this conference has been the contributions of Jacobus Nomdoe, pioneer and executive director of Teen Challenge Western Cape in South Africa as well as Kevin Ward who have shared the Ministry and powerful way from an African context. Kevin Ward continues to pioneer Teen Challenge ministry in Swaziland, now the largest Teen Challenge outreach on the continent. In a unique way he is able to challenge the five nations planting new centers that if God can do it in an AIDS ravaged, poverty-stricken nation like Swaziland where less than 300,000 people earn more than one dollar a week . . . He can do it anywhere on the continent.
John Martin
The LTI ministry here, for all of its blessings, has not been without opposition. More violence and killings in Kaduna Nigeria have delayed the arrival of Pastor Barnabas Yohann (see prayer request below)
The representative from Seychelles had to leave early due to the passing of her mother from meningitis. Ametepey Emanual from Ghana is also delayed for financial reasons. Please pray for a powerful completion of the All Africa Training in Nairobi.

Doug Wever

Doug Wever (left) and I were honored to lead the training of leaders in Nairobi at this critical hour. In 2010 Illicit drug cultivation, processing, trafficking and abuse are on the rise in Africa. Although in global terms the problem does not rise to level of developed nations, It is adding another obstacle to the continent's development.

If the trend continues, Africa faces a major escalating drug crisis. The main drugs produced in Africa are cannabis and khat. According to the 2009 UN-ODCP survey, narcotic drugs like heroin and cocaine, are penetrating sub-Saharan Africa. Lack of coastal patrol and customs has made this region a principal transit route between Asian suppliers and Western consumers.

Bernie teaching

The 2010 study carried out by the UN International Drug Control Program (UNDCP) indicates that African countries are being used as springboards for international trafficking by criminal syndicates. The continent is also increasingly being used by the drug cartels for production and consumption of illicit drugs, as well as money laundering. A consequence of stepped-up drug activity has been a rise in violent crimes, corruption, bank fraud and social decay. African governments are grappling with how to best face this new threat . Teen Challenge offers practical solutions through the power of God. That made this our most strategic LTI to date.

In this strategic hour, it was exciting to provide training as we prepared emerging leaders across the continent of Africa. John and Annie Martin, Executive Directors of Kenya Teen Challenge invited leaders from Ghana, Liberia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Swaziland, South Africa, Nigeria, Seychelles, and Mauritius for six powerful days of ministry, vision-casting, teaching, encouragement, and prayer. We are excited by the fruit that we see in the lives of the ministry leaders of all 10 nations and the new programs preparing to launch in 6 new nations.
As we enjoyed the ministry of Kenya Teen Challenge choir, we could see that God is laying groundwork to move forward collaboratively for Christ in the days, months and years ahead. God infused our time with these directors and staff forging new strong relationships in Christ and transforming lives in the ministries represented. God truly answered our prayer that this LTI be a clear destiny experience in the Lord for everyone involved and a powerful tool to propel this team of visionary servant leaders into the harvest.

A highlight of this conference was the contributions of Jacobus Nomdoe, pioneer and executive director of Teen Challenge Western Cape in South Africa as well as Kevin Ward who have shared the ministry in a powerful way from an African context. They have applied this TC model on the continent! Kevin Teach
The training brought by these visionary African leaders established an entirely different tone for the LTI and the move of the Spirit of God and scripture shared in every session was exciting. Kevin Ward shared a defining word for Teen Challenge worldwide today as he ministered on "Offense" and every one of the 80 leaders came to the altar to pray. It was powerful. Tthe meeting set to end at 3:50 lasted till after 5:00 as leaders sought God at the altar.. These graduates emerged refreshed, recharged and focused on meeting the needs of addicts in their nations in the name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Ghost.
